Water and Health for Sonora Desert Tribes/Fishing Struggle in Mexico

Dear friends,
After a long period without communicating with you, we just wanted to let you know that together with a few friends and a little fundraising we were able to buy 4 water pumps for 2 indigenous communities (Pima and Yaqui) in the Sonora desert.
Comandante German of the Mayo Tribe will deliver them soon and will post the photos of their installation on our blog. With this joint effort we're saving indigenous children's lives this summer (dehydration is a major threat to children's lives in this region where temaperatures reach over 40 degrees Celsius/100 degrees Farenheit during 3 months). Next step will be purchasing water filtration and treatment equipment and supporting their community health project. If you can contribute towards these goals please contact us. Physicians willing and able to lend their services to these communities are also needed. Next week we are also heading to one of the Pacific coastal Cucapa communities who are waging their fishing struggle and defying the Mexican government by continuing their traditional fishing. We will be showing and translating the film "As long as the rivers run" on the fishing struggles in the Northwest of what is now called the United States. Please keep all of us in your thoughts and prayers, the Mexican government is increasing its militarization at a very fast rate and there are more and more signs of paramilitary activity. Queridos amigos, después de un largo silencio queríamos hacerles saber que junto con unos pocos amigos hemos podido comprar 4 bombas de agua para 2 comunidades indígenas (Pima y Yaqui) del desierto de Sonora. El Comandante Germán, de la Tribu Mayo, las llevara pronto a las comunidades y pondremos fotos de su instalación en nuestro blog. Este esfuerzo colectivo salvara las vidas de muchos niños indígenas este verano (la deshidratación causa una alta mortalidad infantil en esta región donde las temperaturas llegan a 40 grados Celsius durante 3 meses seguidos). El próximo paso es conseguir equipos de filtración y tratamiento de agua, y apoyar el proyecto de salud comunitaria en esa zona. Si puedes contribuir para estos objetivos por favor contactanos. Tambien se necesitan medicos que esten dispuestos a prestar sus servicios a estas comunidades. La semana que viene también iremos a apoyar a la comunidad costera del Pacifico de la tribu Cucapá, quienes están desafiando al gobierno Mexicano al pescar como lo han hecho tradicionalmente por miles de años. Exhibiremos y traduciremos la película "As long as the rivers run" ("Mientras corran los ríos") que muestra la lucha de las tribus del noroeste de lo que hoy se conoce como Estados Unidos, por mantener su pesca tradicional. Por favor manténganos en sus pensamientos y oraciones ya que el gobierno Mexicano esta rápidamente incrementando su militarización y las actividades paramilitares.
