LAK Vrooman Road Bridge Project, PID 5669
In 1996 Archeologists conducted a study on land at the corner of Lane Road and State Route 84 in Painesville Twp., Ohio. It had been previously determined that this approximately 3 acre site contained ancient human remains from a study in 1986. Because the County Engineer is proposing a high level bridge that would disturb this burial area I asked permission twice to review the records of the 1996 study. There was no response, so I drove to the office to ask to see the records.
One of the engineers brought out a little book and said it was not available to be copied, but I could look at it in his presence. He said that “the State needed to release the book and that should be soon”. I interpreted this to mean that he felt that the tribes would be giving their permission to disturb this property if necessary for the completion of a bridge. He did not say this, it was solely my interpretation.
In the book there were many pages of instructions about how to complete a survey on burial grounds in the appropriate manner. Further into the book I did find a section that stated “there were 6-7 individuals located including a baby”. The map that accompanied the book showed the area with notations of digging sites used in the study.
My neighbors and I oppose this bridge and have been writing to officials throughout the County and State. We have a web site: bridge-facts.info to explain to interested individuals what has been taking place. Initially this bridge was promoted by the concept of being requested by Homeland Security as an emergency evacuation route from the Perry Nuclear Power plant. When we proved this never happened it was called “an error” and now the main push for the bridge is the traffic accident rate. Per the Lake County Sheriff’s Office there is an average of 4 accidents per year including deer hits and slide offs due to snow.
The Engineer wants a high level bridge to allow semi-trucks to drive to the freeway. Does this justify the desecration of those who lived here long before any of us. The Spirits do not want these souls disturbed. If you agree please write regarding
