Two Women

More often these days, we read of gatherings - of our Elders, the Grandmothers, Spiritual and Medicine People from all over the world; every day people coming together in peace and with hope for a new and better world, where we can all live together in peace and work together to help heal our Earth Mother.

Our spiritual men and women tell us the time is near and we must put aside our differences and come together so that the great healing can begin.

Indigenous people from all over the world gather together and not in judgment of one another - as to who is more Indian than another, or who is more well known that another - personal ego is seen as one of the many things that has brought about our near downfall on this earth and it's discouraged. We are all equal. We are all Creator's children - we are the many beautiful and varied flowers that the late Chief Dan George was fond of referring to.

We feel hope and unity and then something will happen someone will do something that is hurtful and totally uncalled for and based simply on ego, jealousy or for some purpose that is only important to that individual.

We are all human of course, and at times, weak, but we know that our way is not to go out of our way to hurt another, or to initiate a hurtful or dangerous action. What goes around, comes around, we hear time and again. What we give out, we will get back and more so, depending upon our thoughts and actions toward others.

Some time back, without any justification or cause, and without a lick of evidence or proof, false allegations were made against an individual and the non-profit agency she founded many years ago, which was established to help the people of Pine Ridge and Rosebud, or for that matter, anyone who needed a helping hand, they would do their best to see it happened. A small group, who traveled a great distance at their own expense, with a truck loaded with a variety of things that were needed, from clothing to personal care items. As often as she could travel she would get the job done and she had certainly earned the respect and support of many American Indians throughout Indian country.

A quiet woman, who is never known to blow her own horn or to refer to her or what she was doing at all - she just did it year after year.

Along comes a younger woman, eager to do so much - to change situations for the better, to take charge and run with an issue, jumping from one issue to another, as if there was a deadline to be made. There is such a thing as Indian time and in Indian time these things will get done, but it is better to sit back sometimes, be quiet and listen and watch and learn and not put so much energy into being first, or the best or the only one to do the great amount of work that exists to better the lives of native people everywhere.

An Elder Narragansett was fond of saying, "We all have a job to do. It doesn't matter how big or small, what matters most of all, is that we do it well."

This younger woman did a lot of good things in the community, but without cause or justification, without reason, she turns on the older woman and send out false information, warnings to others that this woman is not walking in truth; is not to be trusted. Such a terrible accusation and not supported with any proof whatsoever.

Her motives for this are unclear to this day and she never did the proper thing-the right thing - she never said three small words that mean so much - I am sorry. Nor did she say, I was wrong, I made a mistake, and I am very sorry. Rather, when confronted, she responded with anger and moved on to other circles.

If we cannot give truth and respect the power it deserves and try our best to live our lives with truth, honor and respect every day, how can we hope to come together as Mother Earth's children, in peace and unity with one goal - to heal our Earth Mother, to heal ourselves and to become as one - the unification of the Eagle and the Condor - the people coming together again, as it should be.

These are important matters - there is no room for untruths, jealousy, gossip and ill will.

We all matter and we are all here for a specific reason and we all have a special job to do in our lifetime. Let us all take a reminder and a lesson from this true story. We must think before we open our mouths and speak ill of others. That one act could destroy something that took years to build and for what reason? What is so important that it had to be acted out that way? It only fed negativity, caused hurt and anger in others, and added more time in reaching the goal of mending the Sacred Hoop of Life.

Let us remember the lesson of the young woman and the older woman. Our personal ego is not important, nor are the deeds we do - it's keeping on the good road, walking toward our common goal of peace, health, justice, and unity as one People - one World, created by the Great Mystery.

We have to work together to win over the hate, the negativity, the injustices and suffering throughout the world today. It starts with each one of us and it continues every single day and then, and only then, will we have won - and there will be the greatest gathering ever known.
