A daughter of a prominent Native American publisher and former Senate candidate died in a car accident Tuesday in New Mexico.
Roberta Giago, 36, daughter of Tim Giago, was thrown through the windshield of her car in the accident.
Doris Giago, a professor at South Dakota State University in Brookings, said her ex-husband's daughter is survived by four daughters who range in age from 7 to 17.
Roberta and her family lived near Albuquerque.
"I know that she loved her daughters very much, and she had a rough life, but she was trying hard to get her life straightened out," Doris said. "She was taking classes at a community college, and I think she made peace with God."
Tim Giago could not be reached for comment.
Details about a memorial service were not available at press time.

For those who are interested, listed below is the paragraph that always follows Tim Giago's 'Notes from Indian Country' column. It lists both an e-mail address and snail mail address. I have enjoyed Mr Giago's articles for ages. It is sad to hear of the loss of his Daughter.
(Tim Giago is the president of the Native American Journalists Foundation, Inc., and the publisher of Indian Education Today Magazine. He can be reached at Tim Giago or by writing him at 2050 W.
