November 19th - The Day of the Taino People

Christopher Who?
We are now well past Columbus Day and poor old Chris has been protested every which way possible by all our native brothers and sisters of the Americas. We’ve come a long way together in our struggle as a people and of one mind, when it comes to good old Chris. FYI, did you know that Chris finally made it to the shores of America. By way of jet plane no less, to Florida where his bones were taken to a DNA Lab and ground into fine dust to run test. Test to determine a few unanswered questions. First they found no evidence of his birth records or educational records in Italy. One thing for sure, he wasn’t a Jew, they put that rumor to rest. As if Jews didn’t have enough problems without the added weight of a Hitler within their own ranks. What they did find out about Chris was that he wasn’t even an Italian, no DNA evidence found. He turned out to be a Spaniard from Catalan. They also found out that Chris was a Mercenary who fought against Queen Isabel. The very same person who later financed his first voyage to discover us. Damn can you believe this crap, Chris a low life mercenary hiding out as an Italian in Spain, who knew?
Well in 1992 a group of Taino’s made a conscious decision to turn a negative into a positive. Exactly 500 years after our encounter with Columbus, they declared the resurgence of the Taino people and the establishment of the Taino Nation of the Antilles. Declaring November 19th as the Day of the Taino People, 13 years later we are still celebrating our resurgence as a people. This November 19th, we will be honoring the Indigenous Women, giver of life. The event will take place at Hostos Community College, Grand Concourse and 149th Street, Bronx NY. From 12 pm to 6 pm.
Come join us and immerse yourself in Taino ceremonial, music, song and dance. Attend one of our Seminars on Taino Language, Archeology and artifacts and Taino sacred sites Astronomy. Enjoy performances by the Mexica (Mexico), the Shuar (Ecuadorian Amazon) and the Taino music of Yucayeque Maguey (The Village Drum). Shop our Venders, food and enjoy a presentation of our exotic Parrots. Bring your children and have them attend our Arts and crafts work shop and have them join us in a special, women’s blessing of the children. Last but not least, you are all invited to join us dance our social dance side by side, as we celebrate the rebirth of a nation. It will be a day that both you and your children will always remember.
As for all those battle weary Taino warriors who have been busy organizing and demonstrating the likes of old Chris, take a couple of hours off and join us celebrate your day and what we all have in common as Taino.
