For five years the Secwepemc people have been fighting
against the colonial expansion of the Sun Peaks ski
resort. This threatened expansion would push the
resort further into their unceded territory, called
Skwelkwek'welt.
Throughout these five years of struggle against the
expansion, there have been over 57 arrests of
community members resisting the development and
def ending Secwepemc land. The struggle of the
Secwepemc people for their land and for self
determination is taking place at Skwelkwek'welt,
against the expansion of Sun Peaks, and in the courts,
against the colonial government of Canada that is
protecting Sun Peaks.
In the course of this battle, the names of Mayuk and
Beverly Manuel come up constantly as organizers and
fighters against Sun Peaks' theft of Secwepemc land,
and members of the Skwelkwek'welt Protection Centre
Defenders.
In March, these two Secwepemc women will be appearing
before the BC Supreme Court to challenge the charges
that were brought against them for defending and
asserting sovereignty over their territory.
Even beginning this legal battle will cost many
thousands of dollars, and all money brought in
will go to support Beverly and Mayuk's legal struggle.
