Woman seeks help for nephew
Teen lost his father last year
3/15/2005
Editors Note: Woodrow Springfield is a student at Lodge Grass High School in Lodge Grass, Montana. In 2004, he ran a hilly, three-mile course in just over 17 minutes, placing 18th in the Montana State Championship Class B Boys division. Springfield’s father disappeared last December while hiking in the Big Horn Mountains. This letter comes from Woodrow’s aunt:
My name is Beth and I am a member of the Aapsalooke (Crow) Tribe of Central Montana. My nephew has been invited to travel to Hawaii and Australia to run in several cross-country meets with the International Sports Specialists, Inc. Down Under Sports Tours. He is a very good runner and a real good kid. He doesn't get in trouble and he keeps his grades up. He was invited and went to Australia last year. We were able to have bake sales, plate sales, bingo concession stand raffles and all sorts of fund raisers to help him raise the funds he needed to go on this trip. This year is different though. We were so hurt and lost over the disappearance of my brother that we forgot or were unable to do the fund raising we were able to do last year. My nephew's name is Woodrow Springfield; his Indian name is Two Feathers. Woodrow is 16 years old and a junior in high school.
We have been able to raise $900.00 but we still need to come up with around $3200.00. We haven't given up yet, and have several fundraisers planned, but I feel like we started too late. My favor to ask of you is to see if you know of any resources I might look into to help him raise the funds he needs to go on this trip. Last year, just a week or so before he left on his trip, Woodrow's dad was able to come up with $1000.00 to cover final costs and leave him with about $275.00 spending money. The sad and overwhelming thing about this year is that Woodrow's dad is the one who is missing.
Woody has to have his money in by May 1st, 2005. We are having an Easter Basket Bingo next week so we should bring his need down a couple hundred dollars. He will be representing Montana, Wyoming and Colorado in the events he competes in.
