DULUTH, MN - The American Indian Evaluation Institute, which is the first of its kind in the United States, is being launched in March by The College of St. Scholastica. Participants are being sought from among the region's nonprofit organizations.

The institute is offering a yearlong program, with the first sessions set for March 9 and 10 at St. Scholastica's Duluth campus. It is being directed by Dr. Chandra Mehrotra, professor of psychology and dean of special projects at St. Scholastica, in partnership with the Indigenous Education Institute of Bluff, UT.

The institute will provide hands-on training in program planning and evaluation to staff, volunteers and board members from nonprofit organizations in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. They will learn culturally appropriate methods and develop procedures to assess the effectiveness of their own programs and services.

"What we are doing through the institute is saying that if you use wrong methods, then you come home with the wrong answer," Mehrotra said. "If you use an American Indian program but use a white, middle-class measure to evaluate the program, you get the wrong answers. You've used the wrong instrument."

Instructors will be Dr. Nancy Maryboy and Dr. David Begay of the Indigenous Education Institute. Maryboy and Begay are Native American. Also teaching will be Dr. Michael Quinn Patton, author and evaluation consultant from St. Paul, MN. Mehrotra will assist.

"Dr. Maryboy and Dr. Begay are distinguished scholars who will teach Native Americans how they can include cultural nuances and culturally appropriate methods when they plan and conduct evaluations," Mehrotra said.

Participants will attend four meetings during the first two-day intensive session. Deadline to apply is Monday, Feb. 20. Application forms are available at Applications.

For more information contact Mehrotra at (218) 723-6161 or C. Mehrotra Tentative dates for future sessions are April 20-21, May 18-19 and June 8-9.

The American Indian Evaluation Institute is supported by The College of St. Scholastica and the Otto Bremer Foundation.
