Save the Peaks! Send a message to the City of Flagstaff!

Ya'a'teh,

As many of you are aware, the City of Flagstaff has agreed to sell contaminated wastewater to the Arizona Snowbowl Ski resort for snowmaking on the San Francisco Peaks which are held holy by over 13 Native American Nations. This season, as Snowbowl received only 133 inches of natural snow and was open for less than 2 weeks due to drought conditions, criticism of the ski area's ability to extend its season with wastewater snowmaking has grown.

On March 17th, over 3,000 signatures on collected petitions were handed to Mayor Joe Donaldson urging him to support human rights and to protect the environment by ending the sale of wastewater to the controversial ski area. City Council member Al White stated in the Daily Sun newspaper, "It's not going to happen". The Flagstaff Mayor initially refused to receive the signatures and the response from the city was that the petitions were "unofficial".

In a previous statement Kelvin Long of ECHOES said, "The San Francisco Peaks are the essence of Indigenous life that we are protecting, this is something that the Mayor and the City Council of Flagstaff need to understand, we are willing to work with the city of Flagstaff in building a healthier community, one that does not put corporate and private business interest before the interest of people, and their way of life."

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1. Urge the City Council to stop its sale of the wastewater to the Snowbowl for snowmaking!

The Save the Peaks Coalition is continuing petition efforts (the petition is available online at Save the Peaks - Please Sign the Petition).
