USDA Secretary Mike Johanns May Soon Sign
Death Warrant For American Horses

Dear Friends of Horses:
We need your immediate action to write to Secretary Johanns and ask that he NOT accept a petition brought forward by the three foreign owned horse slaughter plants to fund USDA inspectors to allow these plants to continue slaughtering horses.
Congress passed an amendment in the Agricultural Appropriation Bill that was signed into law by the President on November 10, 2005 that stopped the funding of USDA inspectors essentially stopping the slaughter of horses in the three foreign owned slaughter plants. The ban on slaughter would be effective beginning in February this year and ending October 1st of this year. (House of Representatives 269-158 and Senate 69-28 – a landslide vote to end horse slaughter in our country!)
If Secretary Johanns accepts this petition from the slaughter plants, it will be in direct opposition to the will of the American people and to the voice of Congress who represents the will of the people.
It was through your wonderful letter writing, E-mailing, calls to Congress, and persistence that has led to the ban and we must rally again to the defense of what the majority of Americans want and to the defense of the 60,000 plus horses that will be slaughtered this year if the ban is lifted.
There is no benefit to the American people by having foreign owned slaughter plants in our country and the worst horror is that horses suffer in these plants. It is not a humane way for horses to die.
Please write to:
