Several people paced the driveway Monday in front of Danielle Patterson's mobile home on Oneida Indian Nation territory, awaiting confrontation with nation officials.
They smoked cigarettes and scanned the road leading to Route 46 with binoculars. Patterson's sister, Diane Shenandoah, snapped pictures of passsing cars.
The tension Monday arose from a long-simmering dispute between the nation and several Oneidas who, like Patterson, lived in mobile homes on nation land and refuse to allow the nation to inspect their homes.

The Oneida Indian Nation won't allow a family living on nation land in Oneida to replace a broken furnace.
Nation officials say the new furnace can't be installed until the mobile home is inspected for safety. The owner, Danielle Patterson, has refused to let inspectors in because she believes they will condemn her home and evict her from the nation's original territory in Oneida.
"They're denying me and my children heat in our home," Patterson said. "They are harassing me and my children because I will let none of those housing inspectors into my house."
