The Defense Department has confirmed that a Navajo soldier has been killed in Iraq.
"U.S. Army Sgt. Marshall A. Westbrook, 43, of Farmington, N.M., died in Baghdad, Iraq, on Oct. 1, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee. Westbrook was assigned to the Army National Guard's 126th Military Police Company, Albuquerque, N.M.,” the department said in a statement.
“The Navajo Nation is saddened to hear of the passing of Sgt. Marshall A. Westbrook. On behalf of the Navajo Nation Council and Legislative Branch, I offer our condolences to the family, friends and relatives of Sgt. Westbrook,” said Navajo Nation Council Speaker Lawrence T. Morgan. “We as a nation will always honor his memory and pay tribute to the sacrifice that he and all our fallen warriors have made in the name of freedom and democracy. We are honored by the selfless service of all our military servicemen and –women. I humbly ask of each of us to offer our prayers for their safe return.”
Westbrook was the father of five. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
