The New Jersey Commission on American Indian Affairs is sponsoring a Native American Awareness Rally on November 28, 2005. This rally is being held in order to educate the public and government officials about the Native Americans who still live in the State of New Jersey. Many people and officials in office are not aware that American Indians still exist in New Jersey. They do not know about American Indian culture, heritage, history and current needs.
We are calling on all American Indians to attend and wear their regalia or tribal T-shirts, sweaters or jackets so that those in attendance may be aware of our presence. We invite the non-native public to attend in support of their American Indian friends and neighbors. The Senate will be in session during the rally, and government officials will be in the area and some will be speaking during the day. We will be drumming, dancing and speaking throughout the rally.
The New Jersey commission on American Indian affairs is drafting a letter to help students be excused from school and for adults who need special documentation to be excused from work.
Please plan to attend. We need to make sure the people in New Jersey know that American Indians did not all leave the state, many are still here! We will be joined by many New Jersey American Indian leaders and community members. It will be a wonderful day to celebrate New Jersey's Native American Heritage, lift the concerns of American Indian citizens within the state, catch up with old friends and make a lasting impression on the New Jersey State House.
