Rep. Joe Baca introduced a bill in the House of Representatives this week that would designate the Friday after Thanksgiving Day as Native American Heritage Day.
"Native Americans and their ancestors have played a critical role in the formation of the freest country in the world," said Baca, D-Rialto. "We must encourage greater awareness of the significant role they have played in our nation's history."
The bill would encourage public schools to boost student understanding of Indian culture by focusing on their history, achievements and contributions.
The bill is supported by 184 tribes across the nation, and has also gained sponsorship from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
