LONGEST WALK 2008 – A 4,400 MILE WALK ACROSS AMERICA TO CLEAN UP MOTHER EARTH
“A Commemorative Walk Brings Attention to the Environment: one mile at a time”
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 2007) – On February 11, 2008, Longest Walk participants will embark on a 5 month journey across America walking over 4,400 miles to Washington, D.C. arriving on July 11, 2008. The Longest Walk 2 is being led by American Indian Movement co-founder Dennis J. Banks who is commemorating The Longest Walk of 1978 which successfully brought attention to eleven legislative bills introduced in the 95th U.S. Congress that would have abrogated Native Treaties protecting remaining Native sovereignty. All eleven bills were defeated in Congress.
Similar to 1978, The Longest Walk 2008 is a peaceful, spiritual effort to engage with the public about the disharmony of our environment by leading an effort to clean up our communities. The Clean Up America Campaign is a national effort taken up by the Longest Walk participants to clean up our country’s highways and roads by collecting debris found along the Longest Walk route. This monumental task will engage Walkers in a global effort at a grassroots level to promote harmony with our delicate environment. Longest Walk participants will carry specially marked trash bags to separate the collected refuse into trash bins and recycling bins. A rotating team of walkers will pick up trash along the way with trash pokers leaving a health trail of earth in their path.
The 4,400 mile Walk is an extraordinary grassroots effort to recognize the success of the 1978 Longest Walk that which successfully halted legislation might have had devastating effects on the tribes’ sovereignty while Cleaning Up America mile by mile, village to village, state to state, shore to shore en route to Washington, D.C.

The Longest Walk on My Space
We take up this task to walk in a manner befitting our nations. We shall walk for the Seventh Generation, for peace, for justice, for healing of Mother Earth, for the healing of our people suffering from diabetes, heart conditions and other diseases. We walk with the message: All life is Sacred.
Special thanks to Nancy Blue for the lead.
