The Passing of Gary Rhine

Dear Friends,

It is with deep sorrow that I share the below email with you about the late Gary Rhine, a friend of Native Peoples.

He had been a subscriber of YazzieNet since its early beginnings over 10 years ago, and a valuable networking resource. I had the privilege of meeting him for the first time at the Strong Medicine concert featuring Dr. Buffy Sainte-Marie, and our paths crossed briefly again at the American Indian Film Festival when his health and fitness video REZ ROBICS received an award. Most recently he contacted me for references to Natives displaced by Hurricane Katrina whom he reached out to through Powtawche Williams of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.

As a tribute to him, I include website information regarding his bio, his work (Kifaru Productions, DreamCatchers), and his words (Rhino's Blog).

Links to Kifaru Productions and DreamCatchers websites are further testaments as to his character. My prayers and condolences to his wife Irene and family.

Kifaru Productions

Kifaru Productions has been producing documentaries on contemporary Native American issues since 1990. Our programs have garnered both educational and film industry awards and raves from reviewers as diverse as International Variety and The Washington Post. While one of our titles, "Wiping The Tears Of Seven Generations," was broadcast on The Disney Channel as part of Disney's American Legacy Series, another, "The Peyote Road," was instrumental in overturning a United States Supreme Court decision. The mandate of our work has been to amplify the efforts of Native spiritual leaders including urgent religious freedom issues, "A Seat At The Table," as well as the health of the people, "The Red Road To Sobriety."

Too many movies and television programs about Native Americans focus on historical aspects, neglecting the modern day existence of Indian people. They tend to leave viewers thinking that all the Indians died long ago. This impression is not only false, but harmful. With people thinking romantically of the "noble savages" of yesteryear, the dominant culture tends to deny responsibility for protecting the religious freedoms, land claims, health care and other rights of contemporary aboriginal nations.

Our documentaries all deal with contemporary Native American issues. We welcome your interest and hope our programs assist with your educational and activist efforts.

DreamCatchers has joined forces with Navajo Health Promotions, a division of the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Nation, to produce a health and fitness 2 video set; REZ ROBICS and REZ ROBICS FOR COUCH POTATO SKINS. The project is inspired by the fact that Diabetes has become one of the most serious threats to the health of Indian people both on the reservations and in urban settings.

KIFARU PRODUCTIONS' NEWEST DOCUMENTARY

AMERICA'S SHADOW STRUGGLE:
Struggling For American Indian Religious Freedom

Premiering at The Amnesty International Film Festival with rave reviews including Variety and Indian Country Today, "A Seat At The Table" was designed to raise the level of respect paid to the religious traditions of American Indian people both in the educational institutions of North America and in the halls of government. Together with the companion book of the same name, published by University of California Press, "A Seat At The Table" will be educating the future decision makers of the United States and the world for years to come, about the problems which Indian people continue to face in practicing their spiritual ceremonies.

TThe thread of the program; dialogs between 8 respected Indian leaders and the legendary Professor of Religious Studies, Huston Smith, were shot at The Parliament of The World's Religions, an event which has only taken place 3 times in the last 100 years. Each of the 8 issues dealt with are important ones to Indian people, and together, they offer an insightful glimpse into Indigenous peoples spiritual ways. Available in DVD and VHS Tape.
