RICHMOND — Selectman Donna Loring has resigned after serving less than a year, saying she plans to move out of town. "It has been my honor and great pleasure to serve with all of you. I will be moving to Bradley, Maine, at the end of this month. I am submitting my resignation effective March 31," she wrote in a letter to the other board members.
"I am tendering my resignation now in order to give the public sufficient notice of the open seat," she said.
Loring was elected to the Board of Selectmen last June in a four-way race that ousted incumbent Selectman Alice Knapp.
Loring was the Penobscot Nation's representative to the Maine Legislature for nine years, one of two state representatives for American Indian tribes.
In 2004 she ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for a state Senate seat. She said she would have become Maine's first American Indian elected to the state Senate.
"My time on the board has been challenging but rewarding," Loring wrote in her resignation letter. "Richmond has been my home for the past 15 years, and I thank the people of Richmond for their support and their trust."
