David Melmer Indian Country -- American Indians and supporters gathered outside the Meade County Courthouse during the recent hearing in which county commissioners approved a malt beverage license for Jay Allen, owner of a biker bar in Sturgis, S.D., which would allow him to open a second bar less than three miles from the sacred Bear Butte in the Black Hills. Many opponents of the license felt that the second bar should be located further away from Bear Butte, and that it would threaten future generations of American Indians. Bottom photo -- Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th generation keeper of the sacred pipe, spoke at Bear Butte where hundreds gathered to oppose the malt beverage license that was later granted to bar owner Jay Allen.
