Bear Butte bar's beer license yanked

STURGIS, S.D. (AP) The Meade County Commission is not renewing the beer license for the Sturgis County Line venue near Bear Butte.
County leaders point to unpaid and late payment to construction contractors as their reason for yesterday's denial.
Commissioners can deny licenses based on two factors: the establishment's location or the applicant's character.
Commissioners say ten months of unpaid bills speaks to the character of the owner, Jay Allen.
He can't reapply for another year.
Sturgis County Line still holds an on-sale liquor license, which does not come up for renewal until the end of the year.
Allen runs the Broken Spoke Saloon in downtown Sturgis and the Sturgis County Line. Both are in operation during the August motorcycle rally.
Allen says the Sturgis County Line project has been a financial headache adding that some contractors overcharged or didn't finish their jobs. He denies that he has stiffed the contractors.
