ARTIST TALK:

C.Maxx Stevens

Saturday, November 19, 2005 @ 2pm

In conjunction with the current exhibition:

FIGURES & CIRCLES: C.Maxx Stevens

Exhibition Dates: September 22 – December 16, 2005

The C.N. Gorman Museum is pleased to host a talk by renowned Seminole artist, C.Maxx Stevens. Widely exhibited nationally and internationally, Stevens is celebrated for her dynamic and interrogative art installations which include such venues as the National Museum of the American Indian and Canadian Museum of Civilization. Stevens was recently the Dean for the Center for Arts & Cultural Studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, and has just been named a recipient of the prestigious Eiteljorg Fellowship of Native American Fine Art.

Artist Statement: The installation is about self and identity in today’s world. As Indigenous people we are now overwhelmed with sound and communications coming from everywhere. Today, oral traditions are heard through technologies – video and internet are replacing the written word where questions of self and history collide. Now we are looking as to what is going to happen next.
